New retirement homes planned for Cheltenham

A NEW £20 million retirement complex could soon be created in Cheltenham.

Aspen Retirement has announced plans to transform the former Bovis Homes head offices in Lansdown in 2015.

The proposed development would take over the landmark Regency building in Lansdown Road.

Bosses insisted there is soaring demand for retirement homes in the town.

Jenner Court, a retirement home by McCarthy and Stone, opened in St George's Road less than two weeks ago.

Plans by Aspen for the 1.5 acre site would see 50 new apartments built alongside extra care facilities and communal facilities.

The company said it had decided to create the development after its site in Gloucester, Queen Anne Court, sold out.

Originally built as a private house and used as offices, the building in Lansdown is still home to a few tenants, although the building has been sold to Aspen.

The property itself will be kept and there will be extra facilities including a restaurant, licensed bar, conservatory, and library.

A new block of apartments will also be built behind the existing building.

It will include a series of one, two or three-bedroom privately-owned flats.

Borough councillor Barbara Driver (C, Lansdown) said it was a fantastic idea .

She added: "We need more retirement homes and people need that type of care.

"It also helps free up homes for families and young people. It's just a win-win situation."

Liz Herring, sales and marketing manager for Aspen, added: "The success we experienced at Queen Anne Court, which is only a short drive away from Cheltenham, indicates that there's a need for somewhere in Gloucestershire that offers older people a balance between retaining their independence and having support should they require it.

"Subject to planning, we will be starting work to redevelop the site in 2015.

"While it may seem a long time off, it's never too early to start planning your future by registering your interest in the apartments."
